Challenges and Celebrations!

Wahoo! What an exciting week we just had as we celebrated my return from maternity leave, the emerging of our butterflies, and the filling of our compliment rock jar!

Our week began with challenges.... Our first challenge was to pick up a tissue using only a straw. Many students at first tried to scoop up the tissue with the straw until they realized that you could put the straw on the tissue and then suck through the straw and the tissue would stick to the tip of the straw. We compared this to the proboscis of a butterfly.

The second challenge involved sorting the cans we collected for the canned food drive. We discovered that we collected 24, but how should we sort them? The learners discovered that the cans could be used to create a picture graph to display the different types of canned goods. We learned that there were more vegetables than any other canned good. This week we have an even bigger food drive challenge... tomorrow we are up against the teachers to see who can bring in the most cans.

A big thank you to our parents for their assistance in creating our butterflies. It was neat to see all of the different items that we each used to create our butterflies. Our hallways are all a flutter of beautiful, colorful butterflies.

On Thursday, we had a huge surprise when we came into the room to find a painted lady butterfly who had just emerged from a chrysalis! Soon all five butterflies were drying their wings and preparing to fly. Today we will be releasing our butterflies into the sky where they will fly, pollinate, and lay their eggs.

Finally, we had a blast on Friday as we celebrated receiving our last rock in our compliment jar. To celebrate, we became butterflies by using party blowers as a proboscis and creating antennas that showed a butterfly life cycle. We ended the day with butterfly treats... oranges and juice that we sucked up using straws/proboscis!

What a great week we had with all of our celebrations!
